A public awareness class on monsoon disease prevention was successfully organized by the Help for Helpless Thathampally Unit in collaboration with the Thathampally Sree Narayana Reading Room/Library. The event aimed to educate the local community on staying safe and healthy during the monsoon season, a time when waterborne and vector-borne diseases are most prevalent.
The session, which began at 9 a.m., was inaugurated by Dr. Manu P. Viswam, an orthopedic surgeon and President of Help for Helpless (H for H). In his opening remarks, Dr. Manu emphasized the importance of preventive measures during the monsoon to avoid common illnesses like dengue, malaria, and viral infections.
The class itself was conducted by Dr. K.G. Jayan, Chief Physician at the General Hospital in Ernakulam, who provided invaluable insights on how to protect oneself from monsoon-related health risks. Dr. Jayan discussed topics ranging from the importance of maintaining hygiene, preventing water stagnation, and using mosquito repellents, to keeping homes and surroundings clean to minimize the risk of disease outbreaks.
Participants were encouraged to take practical steps such as using clean, filtered water for drinking, avoiding waterborne food, and ensuring proper sanitation at home. Dr. Jayan also stressed the significance of wearing protective clothing, using mosquito nets, and seeking prompt medical attention if symptoms of common monsoon diseases appear.
The event was well-attended by local residents, who expressed appreciation for the timely and informative session, which they believe will help mitigate the risks associated with the monsoon season. Organisers noted that such awareness programs are essential in fostering community health and resilience.
